Jonathan Vaughn (Also Jon., Johnathan, Jonothon)

This is the beginning of the story of our Vaughan family in America. Research is underway to find more information about our earliest ancestor to Jamestown, VA., America.   This page will be updated as the information is discovered. Please check back soon.

Born in Europe in 1615-Migrated to Jamestown, Virginia in 1636
We have found very little information on Jonathan Vaughan and what we
know is from early investigations done in the 1950's   In the group of  Vaughns that were transported to Jamestown, Virginia in 1636 was one Jonathan Vaughn, a young man in his early twenties.  Jonathan Vaughn came to America to find his fortune seeking land and a living of his own.

For passage, he was indentured in contract for 5 years or until about 1641. After he had worked out his indenture and received his grant of land, he married a young colonist girl. To them was born a son named James. For one who came from the rugged mountainous land of Scotland, where allegiance to clan and family was strong, the coastal plains of the new land and feelings of isolation must have born heavily upon him.

Jonathan was the beginning of our Vaughan/Vaughn family line in America. For more information on the family line from Jonathan to present look at the Paternal Family Tree tab at top of this page.

So far research has turned up little information about Jonathan Vaughan.  His name is listed in “Early Virginia Families along the James River: Their Deep Roots and Tangled Branches, Vol. 111” “Early Virginia Immigrants, 1623-1666” “Cavaliers and Pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants 1623-1666, Vol. 1”
